Calendar of Events
By Catharine Hadley, Arts and Entertainment Editor, catharinehadley@gmail.com
The theme of this column is "trying new things." I'm happy to be starting this new project of writing the entertainment column for Leisure Living Magazine! I've done all I could to make the entertainment listing complete and varied, so there should be something for everyone. Although I've done my best to make sure all the information is accurate, please go online or call ahead to confirm your plans.
Any suggestions and details of your upcoming events can be sent to me at catharinehadley@gmail.com.
Our celebration of the nation's 250th birthday includes several events - too many to mention - over the Independence Day weekend. One truly special event will take place a few weeks later.
The Huron Historical Society and alumni of the Huron Playhouse will present "1776," the Tony Award-winning musical, July 30 through Aug. 1 at McCormick School Auditorium. The Huron Playhouse was Ohio's oldest continuing summer theatre program before it closed in 2016. Dr. Jann Graham Glann, who formerly served as the managing director of the playhouse and a professor of theater at BGSU Firelands, is the director.
I have lovely memories of the Huron Playhouse, going back to my childhood. My sister, a very talented seamstress, spent a summer working in the costume department. I loved hearing her stories about the actors and actresses preparing for roles. As an adult, I was always impressed by the amount of talent and hard work that went into the productions.
The summer season is also farmers' market season! One of my friends recently went to the Saturday market in downtown Sandusky. She loved it and gave it such a glowing review that I immediately put it on my calendar. In Vermilion, the Markets in the Park are held Saturdays through July and August in Victory Park. Other farmers' markets are mentioned in the calendar below.
Artists are invited to participate in a juried exhibit in August, sponsored by the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council. Check the website for details. The entry deadline is July 12. The exhibit will last through August, and will be part of "A Birthday in Brushstrokes" event on Aug. 8 - celebrating the fifth birthday of The Arts Garage.
If you love art and like to visit Port Clinton, don't miss the Port Clinton Women's Club art show on July 12 and the Port Clinton Artist' Club art show on Aug. 1 and 2. Both events are held at Lakeview Park.
To submit an event, email it to catharinehadley@gmail.com by July 14.
